Tutorial: Curling doll hair

When you want to curl doll hair, never use a curling iron as it will most likely fry the hair. Instead, follow this step-by-step, modelled by Felicia!

Materials:

-Doll, obviously (Note: I do not recommend using a custom doll that has been repainted, as this process may loosen acrylic paint)
-Large bowl or cooking pot of boiling water
-Brush
-Linen water spray (optional)
-Small rubber bands
-A set of long, thin tools to wrap hair around (such as pencils, pipe cleaners...in this tutorial I used some incense I wasn't fond of, though keep in mind it can be messy)

First, brush the doll's hair out well (I recommend using linen water spray during this step). Then, start separating sections. If there are any pieces of hair you would like to leave uncurled, I recommend sectioning them off separately with a rubber band. For the pieces you do wish to curl, start wrapping them around your tools and securing with a rubber band or two each.

Dip the doll's hair into the boiling water for approximately 45 seconds.

Then, immediately run it under (or soak it in) ice cold water for a minute or two. Leave it to air dry (it's OK to use a towel, but never a hair dryer as it can likely cause damage).

The more completely the hair dries before it is removed from the tools, the tighter the curls will be. When it is ready, carefully remove the hair from the tools and style it with your fingers. Voila!

It is also possible to create a wavy or crimped effect by braiding the hair instead of putting it around tools, or straighten hair by allowing it to hang loose as it is boiled/cooled down.

Disclaimer: I can't guarantee your results. It is best to practice on a doll you don't care much about. Needless to say, this is for dolls only - never attempt this on a real person.
