Vinyl doll hair reroot tutorial

Rock Angelz Sasha! Id wanted one since she was first released, but I didnt get the chance to buy one before she completely sold out. For only a dollar, I wasnt about to leave her hanging on Value Villages wall of toys.

Whats this? Seems her previous owner was a bit scissor happy. Tsk! Oh well, I can fix this.

Materials required:

-Mug of water
-A long, sturdy needle (length is key)
-Thread
-Nail clippers, preferably dull
-Tweezers
-Replacement hair (For qualitys sake, I recommend using saran hair. My preferred supplier is http://restoredoll.com )
-An object that can be used to safely push down on the sharp end of a needle
-A large safety pin
-Scissors

First, its off with her head. To remove a Bratz head, hold the dolls neck over a mug of boiling (or near boiling) water for about 35 seconds to steam it and make the heads vinyl softer. Then, push the head down onto the neck and carefully pull it off. Take extra care if using a male doll - there is a larger neck anchor on the male body which is more prone to breaking. Other types of fashion dolls may have similar neck anchors.

Once the head is off, I recommend taking a pair of dull nail clippers to the strands of hair that have been butchered (or the whole head, if you want to do a full reroot) and pull them completely out of the head. Any remaining stubs can be removed with tweezers.

Cut a length of thread about 4-5 times the length of the dolls head and fold it in half. Stick the creased end of the thread through the eye of the needle (important: do not knot) and have an amount around the length of the dolls head laying out on the creased end.

Bend the large safety pin to approximately a 90 degree angle. Stick it into one of the holes which once contained hair, or create a new one if desired.

Remove the pin (twist it around a bit while pulling it out) and immediately insert the needle into the hole, eye down. Use a tool to direct and push the needle out the dolls neck hole (I usually use a doll hairbrush made of thick hard plastic to do this).

Remove the needle through the neck hole, while leaving the thread in place. The creased end should be hanging out the neck hole, and the loose ends should still be sticking out of the scalp.

Take a small amount of hair (look at the amount of strands in each hole on the head for an idea) and tie a knot on one end. Be sure that this is longer than it needs to be in the end, especially if you are rooting very short hair. Slip the knotted end into the loop hanging out the dolls neck hole. Then, grab the loose thread ends that are hanging out the top of the head and carefully pull until the thread loop is out of the head, and the hair is correctly in place. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Once youve finished adding hair, its time to steam the neck hole again.

Then, carefully place the head back onto the body and adjust it until it sits properly.

Brush the hair out, and trim the new strands as desired. Be careful! Cutting in small intervals can help.

Voila!

DISCLAIMER: I cant guarantee your results and suggest using a practice doll before starting on a project youre really concerned with. Needless to say, this is for dolls only.

EDIT: What happened to my apostrophes?

I wish I had seen this BEFORE I threw out, sold, and gave away half of my dolls. [I went through my "I wanna be a hairstylist phase!"]. But, to be honest, I don't think I'd have the patience. =]
Aw! Don't throw them away, even if you don't want them, a thrift store will take even the most beaten up dolls. Someone might be looking for that doll/parts of it to restore!

So you can take a regular bratz doll head off it's body and put it back on? I thought only the bratz head gamez could only do this.

Yeah, just do it carefully (soften the head with steam, push it down onto the neck before pulling it up and off). Be extra careful with Boyz since the anchor securing the head is larger.

The Head Gamez dolls are actually kind of a waste because the heads just don't stay on that body...they're known to wobble around.

And yes you are right about the head gamez. But you know what works to keep them from wobbling....use those little rubber bands that come with the dolls ( the ones that are on their hands) and tie it around the stem. Then place the head back on. You'll see that the head is now more secure. Totally works.

Ooh, thanks. Good to know in case I find a Rina...

alright, alcy, i'm having a seriously hard time. i was reading other tutorials and it said to cut the hair as short as possible (for a complete reroot) and then pull out the rest of the hairs from the inside with needle-nose pliers. the holes for their necks are way too small to do that so i'm like completely lost as far as what to do. :[
Don't worry, I never do the needle nose pliers thing. What I usually do is cut the hair short, see what I can pull out easily with tweezers, then work at it with some dull nail clippers. Some Bratz have the hair glued into the head on the inside, for these I'd hold the head upside down and pour a bit of acetone in overnight then wash it out well, but ONLY if you plan on repainting - it can remove facial features. Another thing you can do if it's really stubborn is to take a flathead screwdriver and stick it up the neck hole, then scrape it along the inside of the scalp - this helps a lot sometimes.

Oh, and I forgot if I told you, but using a 5" needle is much easier than what I did for this tutorial - it cuts out the need for the safety pin, takes way less time, and is a lot less work on your hands.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I'm working on customizing a Bratz right now and it's really hard to find info on them.

I have a few questions -- do you know where you can find 5" needles outside of the internet? And do you know of any good way to remove glitter without removing the rest of the makeup? I also have random silver nail polish on the doll I got (blegh eBay sellers only vaguely familiar with what they sell) and while I think it's Sharpie I'm not really sure. Any ideas on how to take that off would be highly appreciated.

This is really very useful, thank you again!

I've heard of 5" needles being sold at craft stores, but I haven't had such luck. I bought mine from restoredoll.com.

Some people have had luck removing glitter bit by bit by scratching it off with a needle, but keep in mind there will be some change in the texture (could possibly be OK if you put clear sealant overtop afterwards maybe?).

If it's nail polish, it will be much easier to remove than Sharpie. I recommend trying 100% acetone polish remover first (be very careful not to get it on any face paint or other marks you intend to keep intact, and wash the doll with soap and water afterwards as prolonged exposure can cause damage to the vinyl).

My only experience with Sharpie wasn't a metallic one...I wasn't able to remove it, but a friend was - she used benzoyl peroxide cream to bleach it off. I think what you do with that is put it on the doll once a day and keep it in a sunny place until the stain is removed. Good luck!
